According to the Filter Manufacturers Council, businesses in the United States that operate large vehicles disposed of approximately 400 million used oil filters last year, contributing to an alarming generation of 170,000 tons of scrap metal and a staggering 90 million gallons of contaminated oil.
For context, if 400 million oil filters are discarded yearly, it means around 800 million ounces—equating to roughly three million gallons—of oil are being lost in the process. This poses a persistent issue for companies that rely on large vehicles for waste disposal and other operations.
Robert Lehmann, COO of Certified Technologies (Certech), emphasizes the gravity of the situation, stating, “The disposal of used oil and oil filters is a significant challenge.” He further elaborates that a company with a fleet of trucks may be discarding filters at an alarming rate. For instance, changing the oil in each vehicle six times a year translates into a staggering volume of waste.
To address this pressing issue, Certech, based in Minneapolis, introduces its innovative PureCycle reusable oil filter. Unlike traditional filters, this modern filtration system eliminates the need for paper parts that require disposal, thus minimizing waste and environmental impact. Since its debut in the fall of last year, this filter has undergone two years of testing in various industries under real-world conditions, further validating its effectiveness.
Mike Langiewiscz, the transportation director for Northern States Power Company, shares his company’s positive experience with trialing reusable filters and expresses plans to transition their entire truck fleet to this eco-friendly option. The switch not only enhances environmental sustainability but also positively impacts NSP’s financial performance.
The financial benefits of using reusable oil filters are compelling. Traditional paper filters for larger vehicles can cost as much as $30 each, and if they are replaced six times annually, a single vehicle could incur annual costs of about $180. In stark contrast, a reusable filter costs $169 and can last up to five years, showcasing significant savings over time.
Furthermore, Lehmann points out that using reusable filters mitigates the risk of legal fines and cleanup expenses associated with improper disposal. He warns, “Regardless of whether you handle disposal in-house or outsource it, the liability remains yours. Your company’s name is on the manifest, and any issues prompt regulatory scrutiny.”
The complete assembly of the PureCycle Reusable Filter includes essential components such as an adapter plate, canister, pet cock, pleated stainless steel cloth filter, and various oil rings, ensuring compatibility with major engine types. This design inherently reduces the need to stock multiple filter types, providing efficiency and convenience.
Additionally, Certech offers a specialized cleaning machine for its filters; however, these reusable filters can simply be cleaned using a parts bath with clean solvent, providing an easy maintenance solution.
